Homelessness Reduction Act to commence in April 2018 17/08/2017 Labelled as Legislation

The Homelessness Reduction Act received Royal Assent in April 2017 and in a letter to Chief Executives of Local Authorities the Minister for Local Government, Marcus Jones, has announced the intention to commence the Homelessness Reduction Act in April 2018.

The Government have promised an additional £61million to local authorities to meet the additional responsibilities and new burdens placed on them by the Act but the formula for distribution of the additional funding for the Act will not be announced until the Autumn although it is promised that Government will make the first payments to local authorities in "Winter 2017/2018"

The necessary Regulations will be laid before Parliament in the winter and it is intended to review the Homelessness Code of Guidance and to publish a draft in the Autumn but the final Code will not be available until Spring 2018. No precise dates are given.

A series of events to help local authorities plan for implementation of the Act are planned to be held by the Government's Homelessness Advice & Support Team in September and October 2017.
