Latest figures from Department for Communities and Local
Government show annual new build dwelling starts in the year to
March 2017 totalled 162,880 - up by 15% compared with the year to
New build completions in the same period totalled 147,960 - an
increase of 6% compared with the previous year.
The figures, published on 25 May, show that new build starts are
now 152% above the March 2009 trough, however, remain 12% below the
March 2007 peak.
Private sector new build starts in March quarter 2017 were up 4%
at 36,470 and housing association new build starts were up 2% at
6,340. However, new build starts by local authorities fell from 560
in the quarter to December 2016 to 350 in the quarter to March
2017. New build dwelling completions by local authorities in the 12
months to March 2017 totalled 1,840 - representing just over 1% of
all completions across all tenures
