Former Housing Minister Gavin Barwell lost his Croydon Central
seat at the General Election on 8 June 2017. On 15 June, the Prime
Minister appointed Alok Sharma as his successor - the
6th Housing Minister since 2010.
Alok Sharma is 49 years old and a Conservative MP for Reading
West. The Indian-born, Reading-raised MP was elected in 2010.
Before his appointment as Housing Minister, he was the Minister
for Asia and the Pacific and his previous roles have included being
a member of the Commons Treasury select committee, the Commons
Science and Technology select committee, a Parliamentary Private
Secretary at the Treasury and Conservative Party Vice Chairman.
Also, he has served as the Prime Minister's Infrastructure Envoy to
India and has been a Parliamentary Private Secretary to Oliver
Letwin MP, the former Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster.
Before entering politics, he qualified as a chartered accountant
with Coopers & Lybrand Deloitte, and worked for 16 years within
the banking sector.
Following his appointment, ARCH chair, Councillor Clare Salier
has written a
joint letter with Hugh Broadbent, chair of the National
Federation of ALMOs, seeking a meeting with the new Minister.
