NICE to develop public health guideline on housing 19/01/2017

NICE (National Institute for Health & Care Excellence) are to issue new public health guidelines on housing to improve health and wellbeing.

Work is ongoing to scope the guideline, but the intention is that it will support localities & organisations to commission for 'improved health through the home', with a particular focus on enabling existing housing to offer the best possible environment for people to sustain and/or regain their independence and have a good quality of life, particularly as their circumstances and needs change. It has the potential to greatly benefit the integration of 'home' into local commissioning for improved health and wellbeing.

As this is at scoping stage the title of the Guideline document  'housing: planning to improve health and wellbeing' is likely to change to reflect the intended outcome/focus i.e. it is not about spatial planning/planning for new homes but about existing homes & the action that can be taken to improve/adapt/modify this environment.  The populations and/or interventions are also not yet decided - this will be informed and influenced as the work evolves.

The new NICE Guideline for health & housing is expected to be published in April 2019.  Further details can be found on the NICE website.
