SHIFT - helping ARCH members demonstrate their sustainability 18/02/2015

ARCH members have made a positive choice to retain the management of their housing stock, unlike other authorities that have chosen to transfer either full ownership or the management of their stock. Like other housing providers, ARCH members need to demonstrate their sustainability to a wide range of stakeholders, to tackle fuel poverty and to meet the challenges of the 2050 carbon reduction target in the Climate Change Act. Reducing carbon and reducing cost go hand in hand and the SHIFT network has also assisted members in achieving significant reductions in expenditure, a key priority for local authorities.

The SHIFT network addresses all of these needs. Membership provides unrivalled assistance in improving organisational sustainability, plus it provides independent verification of organisational sustainability credentials.  Membership also brings substantial discounts on other services, such as training or consultancy services such as CROHM.

SHIFT pictureThe Sustainable Homes Index For Tomorrow (SHIFT) was developed with the support of the Homes and Communities Agency, the Greater London Authority the UK Green Building Council and WWF-UK.

SHIFT members commit to measuring, monitoring, independent assessment, peer-to-peer learning and continual improvement. Members benefit from a UK-wide support network with access to expertise and guidance. As a body, SHIFT membership has doubled in the last two years.

Organisations join SHIFT at all stages of their sustainability journey. Some come with little prior experience of addressing environmental issues, while other come with very strong existing credentials they want to boost via external accreditation and learning from others. Members can - and do - achieve real, tangible improvements through SHIFT.  There are now over 65 organisations involved in SHIFT.

When you join, you receive support and assistance with improving your sustainability. This is provided by support from a dedicated sustainability expert, backed up by the knowledgeable Sustainable Homes team, with support from SHIFT network members at regular Conferences, seminars and breakfast events held throughout the year. Your improvements will be independently assessed so that you can compare your performance year on year, and compare performance with other members. You will also gain public recognition with SHIFT Awards, which range from Platinum to Highly Commended.

The award-winning SHIFT programme provides you with:

  • the opportunity to illustrate to your residents and members that you are reducing your impacts and costs, and helping to tackle fuel poverty;

  • a robust framework that drives improvement and cuts costs across your organisation;

  • a recognised, independent benchmark that allows you to demonstrate improvement and compare your organisation with others;

  • the opportunity to ask experts, policy-makers and your peers all those difficult questions;

  • direct access to award-winning consultancy and training at discounted rates;

  • influence with policy-makers and recognition by government and the housing sector;

  • use of the SHIFT membership logo and significant media exposure.
