The Benefit Cap: House of Commons Briefing 09/07/2015

Shortly before the summer Budget and the announcement of the reduction of the Benefit Cap from £26,000 to £20,000 (£23,000 in London) the House of Commons Library produced a briefing paper for MPs setting out the background, rationale and numbers and characteristics of affected households. It also includes the reaction and comment on the policy and proposals for further reductions in the cap threshold.

A commitment to reduce the cap from £26,000 to £23,000 was included in the Conservative Party's 2015 Election Manifesto but as we now know the Chancellor announced that the cap threshold outside London is to be reduced to £20,000.

ARCH members may find this House of Commons Briefing Paper a useful reference document and background context when considering the local impact of the announcements in the Summer Budget of further reductions in the Benefit Cap.
