Government's consultation on
Rents for Social Housing from 2015-16 closes at 11.45 p.m. on
No doubt this deadline was chosen so that CLG civil servants
have plenty of reading to ensure they sleep soundly while Santa
downs his sherry and mince pies and fills their stockings.
ARCH's draft contribution to CLG's bedtime reading is here. It contains
no surprises for regular readers of this blog.
On behalf of member councils, I have objected strongly to the
proposal to end rent convergence, pointing out that it reduces the
amount available for investment in new and improved homes by more
than £2 billion over the full business plan period.
I have also argued that councils should retain their legal
discretion to depart from national rent policy where it makes local
sense to do so, both in relation to the overall formula for
rent-setting, and in relation to any arrangements for different
treatment of high-income tenants.
It is still a draft: ARCH members still have the
opportunity to suggest additions or amendments in the few days
remaining. Let's make sure we give CLG the best Christmas present
