The Self-build and Custom Housebuilding Act 2015 received Royal
Assent on 26 March 2015.
The Act builds on existing government initiatives with the aim
of increasing the number of self/custom built homes in England and
Wales. It requires councils to keep a register of individuals and
associations seeking to acquire serviced plots of land for
self/custom built homes.
The Conservative Party Manifesto 2015 contained a commitment to
introduce a "Right to Build" with the aim of doubling the number of
self-build and custom build homes by 2020.
Measures to take forward the Right to Build will be included in
the forthcoming Housing Bill.
The House of Commons Library has produced a useful briefing paper on the
Act which ARCH members may find useful.
