In his Autumn Statement 2023, Chancellor of the Exchequer Jeremy Hunt announced that, from April 2024, Local Housing Allowance rates would be raised to the 30th percentile of local private market rents. The LHA determines the maximum housing support for private renters, based on the area where they live and the size of their household. The proposal means that in principle, a tenant could claim support to meet the full rent on any of the cheapest 30% of rented homes in their area. This should make a significantly larger number of homes accessible to tenants needing help with rent.
On 9 January, the government announced that legislation has been laid to implement the changes and published the LHA rates that will come into force on 1 April if it is passed.
