Early in 2024 the Government consulted on a new requirement for all senior housing staff working for local authorities or housing associations to have, or be working towards, an appropriate professional qualification. On 30 September, MHCLG published the outcome of the consultation. The proposal will go ahead, with some amendments arising from the consultation. A direction has been issued to the Regulator of Social Housing requiring the introduction of a new Competence and Conduct Standard applicable to all registered providers, to come into effect from October 2026. Landlords with over 1000 homes, which includes all local authorities, will have three years to ensure all relevant staff comply with the new requirements.
